BOD5IQ Sensor

The innovation addresses a key challenge in wastewater management: the timely and cost-effective measurement of Five-Days Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD₅), a critical indicator of water quality. Traditionally, determining BOD₅ levels requires lengthy laboratory procedures that take up to five days, delaying decision-making and increasing operational costs at wastewater treatment facilities. To solve this problem , an artificial intelligence-driven software sensor was developed using data from the Kauma Wastewater Treatment Plant in Lilongwe, Malawi. This AI-powered tool uses machine learning algorithms to predict BOD₅ levels rapidly and accurately, providing a reliable alternative to conventional testing methods. By offering instant estimations, the software sensor enables operators to monitor and manage wastewater treatment plants. The innovation is planned for future expansion to other treatment plants in Blantyre city and across Malawi. These advancements aim to enhance wastewater treatment efficiency and protect water bodies from pollution due to untreated or poorly treated effluent.
Innovation Uniqueness
The AI-driven software sensor stands out as a novel and superior solution compared to existing methods for monitoring BOD₅ levels. Unlike traditional laboratory techniques that are time-consuming and require costly reagents, this innovation provides rapid predictions in real-time, significantly reducing the waiting period from five days to minutes. Furthermore, its reliance on machine learning algorithms allows for continuous improvements in predictive accuracy, as more data will be collected from various wastewater treatment plants. The planned upgrade to replace current dependence on the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) parameter with a faster alternative will further enhance its efficiency. The addition of a user-friendly interface that displays treatment efficacy metrics and compliance with the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) will make this innovation highly practical and operator-friendly. It will not only streamline wastewater management operations but will also ensure regulatory compliance by providing early warnings when effluent quality risks violating environmental standards.
